What is required to repair the side mirrors control?

What is your question?

The control on the center console will not function for the side mirrors. I attempted to use it once, and it did turn the left mirror; however, a little smoke came from the knob on the console. This is a wide car and not being able to fold the side mirrors in actually creates a really tight squeeze to try and pull into the garage.

What makes this problem better or worse?

Just trying to use it.

How long has your 1997 Mercedes-Benz S500 had this problem?
