Vehicle won't start and what caused the smoking and burning electrical scent

Hello, has the battery recently been changed; is there a chance the cables may be on backwards? Alternatively, since you have excessive amounts of power going through the starting system when attempting to start the vehicle, if there is any kind of issue with the cabling, starter or other components electrically, then this could happen. A hands on inspection is needed to figure out what is going on.
