Follow the #1 spark plug lead back to the distributor and take note of where it sits on the cap. Disconnect the battery and remove the distributor cap. Rotate the engine by hand via the crank pulley until the mark on the crank pulley lines up with the "TDC" or "0" mark on the chain cover and the rotor in the distributor is pointing to the cylinder 1 position. If the pointer is out 180, rotate the engine 1 turn. Remove the drive belt and alternator, then remove the chain cover. With the use of a bottle of "white out" paper correction paint, after verifying the alignment marks are correct on the crank and countershaft, paint one gear tooth and mating chain link on each gear including two side by side on the cam. Loosen the tensioner and remove the chain and cam gear. If replacing the chain, transfer the paint marks to the new chain if not, during reassembly, ensure the chain marks line up with their respective gear, double marks on the cam.
