After driving 10-15 minutes in town, the gauge registers 3/4 hot and the car smells hot. I've had the thermostat and water pump changed, and 3 mechanics have not found anything else wrong. The gauge registers normal when driving on the interstate. Any ideas of what it could be?
Yes, both fans are working properly, according to the mechanics. Also the radiator was replaced 20,000 miles ago.
I would recommend an opinion from another qualified shop. If you have issues around town, but not at higher speeds, it would seem that air flow is at issue. That's why I weent with cooling fans. I still think your fans may not be coming on when driving around town. They may come on for other reasons (such as with the AC on), but maybe not when the engine is getting hot around town. Could be other things too, but without checking it first hand it's tough to guess.
