Ironically enough, the check engine light is telling you something IS wrong. It's just something that's not readily noticeable to you, the driver. Still, this issue can be quite detrimental to vehicle performance, efficiency and operation. It can also worsen and cause collateral damage to further components. So -- do have a test performed to find out what has failed. Don't just seek to bypass or clear the light. Good luck.

The Check Engine light being on is indicating that there is a problem somewhere. It may be something related to emissions and may not being causing a drivability issue at this time. Alot of auto parts stores and some repair facilities will pull codes at no charge.
