I had to replace my shift cable. However, I am not able to fully push on the plastic end to the shift linkage coming off the transmission. Is there a trick to this?

The shop manual does not show any special instruction to this task. I would consult a local technician near you for some hands on advice, or some discussion in person that can yield the result you need.
