How could my ignition coil crack?

What is your question?

The local mechanic said that ignition coil was cracked, how would that happen? He was also the guy who did my inspection last month, was there something going on that he should have seen?

The engine has six individual coils each secured to the valve cover with one bolt, someone could have over tightened the securing bolt when they were replacing the spark plugs or the coil may have just failed. If the insulation breaks down the spark in the coil tries to get out and find a path to ground and may start a crack.
