What causes Severe shaking during acceleration

Is the shaking in the way the engine runs like it has a misfire under load on one cylinder? If so, there may be an ignition system problem that's not noticeable when the car's just cruising but is apparent when accelerating because of higher load. If the shaking is like the engine moving around on it's mounts under acceleration, it could have a broken motor or transmission mount.
