Can I buy my own ball bearings and have a shop do the labor, and if so about how much would it cost. Or can I do them myself?

Most shops will not allow you to supply parts there labor rate is based on them making profit on parts and if the parts failed the law says they carry the burden of warranty even though they didn't supply the parts. Labor guide says replacement of upper ball joint is about 1.3 hours, lower ball joint replacement is just over an hour.
A ball joint and a ball bearing are two different things. Since you apparently were unaware of this, it is likely that you would have difficulty getting the right parts. I would leave it up to the mechanic, but he will probably mark up the price of the parts. This is how mechanics make part of their money.
Thanks so much! Do u know if there is a special tool to change my lower joints on my 1999 lincoln town car? I had the top ones done, but im not sure if they are done the same way....?
