I have had thid problem and in most cases you have to replace the the whole mechanism. The cost is cheap at a junk yard and there are plenty. acouple of screws and electric hook up are all you need to remove and replace.
If you push the trunk open button and you hear the latch trying to work then your problem could very well be a rust buld up on the latch itself preventing the latch to properly close or open. try using wd 40 on the latch while someone pushes the trunk button sporadically . This will cause vibration on the latch and will shake off the excess rust after a short time you will be able to close the trunk normally. This remendy will work if the latch bar is not broken from slamming the trunk shut.. be sure to put something aroud the latch area so spray will not touch the cloth area. wear safety glasses
