How difficult is is to change the door ajar switch. What does this job entail? Are there any tricks or tips to taking the door panel off?

It is not terribly difficult... With removing the door panel, use patience, caution and care. Go slow. Remove all visible screws. Obtain a trim tool to pop the push pins on the perimeter one by one. Then slide up on the panel to unhook it from the door skin.
Hello, before you start taking things apart, try spraying WD-40 ito the door latch area. I know it sounds dumb, but it has routinely been suggested and it works ! I've also had problems with the turn signals, and sprayed the turn signal lever internal area with "good ol' WD, and cured that problem too. I love my MKVIII it had 22k miles on it when I bought it, and now have 166k on it. I have changed the air suspension with Strutmasters and still rides good. The lights are expensive to replace but you can buy the 1997 light bulb and wire extension, but will have to splice on the old connector. Other than that keep on enjoying one of americas great cars, with style, comfort, and great MPG (19 & 28mpg hwy)
I had this same problem & I tried the WD40 trick & it really worked. I had to do it about six times, but finally it went off & has not done it again.
