What is your question?
does the front drive shaft have to be installed for the transmission to engage?

NO DIP STICK...SEE BELOW... It's a plug in front of the transmission pan. This is an ugly job to fill, requiring that the vehicle be running while you do it. It's really best to let a shop or dealer do this, but if you must: The transmission should be at least a little warmed up. Then start the engine up again and run through all the gears while the vehicle is stationary. Put it in park and get under, open the plug and check fluid level with your finger. With the engine still running add fluid until it just drips out. You'll have to come up with some kind of pump to get the fluid in there. Autozone probably sells something inexpensive to get this done.
