Oil is spurting out on to the engine. I was told it was the timing gasket.

The engine has a timing cover that mates to the engine. There is typically gasket sealant here to prevent leakage. Leaks can occur here. To be sure where your oil leak is originating from, any visible oil should be cleaned and then a dye should be added to pin point the source of the leak with a black light / UV light.
