Is this physically possible, and what would it cost? I would accept a 2WD with non-drive axle free-wheeling if 4WD is not feasible or cost effective.

CVT's are great on gas, but usually leave something to be desired in the drivability department. Sorry, but if that's what came on your car, you're stuck with it.
