Hi, my name is Devin. I am an auto repair expert with the Car Genius team here at RepairPal. I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with your vehicle. The issue sounds like the issue with your Grand Cherokee may be transmission-related. These symptoms could indicate worn internal transmission components, a failing torque converter, or low transmission fluid levels. Sometimes, issues with the driveshaft, U-joints, or transfer case (if it's a 4WD) can also cause clunking and make it feel like it's slipping out of gear. However, the intermittent re-engagement and RPM changes you described are more commonly linked to transmission problems. A transmission fluid check and scan for any stored trouble codes would be a good first step to get a clearer diagnosis. If this persists, it's best to get it inspected before any further damage occurs.
