trans stays in low gear too long all the time, my mechanic tested it, says it needs trans job quoted me $2400. I trust him, but want to know if this is good price

That's about what it costs to rebuild a transmission, generally. It depends on who does the work, local labor rates and what's actually wrong with it. Can't say much more without diagnosing it myself. But if the fluid was black or burnt smelling, it needs a rebuild, I can tell you that for sure.
I just found this site and realize that you asked this question months ago but I hope you got more info before paying so much money for a trans overhaul. I just started having problems with my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee not shifting right and after some research and talking to people I really trust, turned out to be the governor and solenoid. With trans fluid flush as well- total parts were about $300. I got lucky and have a guy to do the labor that I can really trust so I gave him $200 for his time. He helped me out a lot and I would rather spend $500 than $2400 anytime. BTW- I found out it was the governor by having the codes read at AutoZone where I could see what they were as well.
