I will try feeling the exhaust I don't know anything about this other than what I have read on here, but hate to go looking and sounding stupid. I have mentioned the cat converter several times and they seem to sluff me off I do know its expensive to replace..thanks for your help

If you can find a shop that sells used tires in your area and they do repair work, this type of shop will usually give you a low and fair price. One in my area took a 2002 ford escape, cut out cat and flexpipe and put new cat and flexpipe in and welded it. Parts and labor $289 dollars. You can't really beat that. A catalytic converter can not be cleaned sorry.

Where is your area I seem to be having a problem communicating How do they actually test or tell if the cat converter is bad if there is no code. Is it guess work? Seems like so many shops now rely only on what the computer says...I'm small town Indiana...I have been told by a shop that they can clean the cat converter see what I mean??? 289.00 is unbelievable I want to go to those guys..

Catalytic converters cannot be "cleaned" out. Some places might be willing to cut out the honeycomb filter inside for a cash transaction... it is illegal afterall. That option is popular in places where inspections have to be done. If you don't have inspections in your state you can always remove it and install a section of pipe in it's place. Either one of the options could throw a check engine light due to the signal sent from the O2 sensor depending on whether or not there is one located at the cat.

Did some reading where as if not totally packed can be removed & soaked in soapy warm water over night and flush out with good pressured hose does & helps clean out for further use // some even implied the use of laquer thinner!! a full can to around half a tank of gas & run her almost dry and maybe a touch more! WHO WOULD OF THOUGHT???!! These are guys who have been license mechanic's for over 45 yrs and some a bit younger and seems to of helped a lot so!!!! & SOME IT HAS NOT!! Never say it cannot be done as others have proved differently!!
