Hello, This is an electronic failure, and the cause needs to be identified. This may be due to a faulty transmission control module, one of a few sensors in the transmission, or even damage or fluid contamination of the wiring harness leading to the transmission. However, if you notice the indicator on the instrument cluster or shifter says you are in a different gear than you selected, it may just be the shifter or transmission position sensor. I see it recommended that AAMCO offers free diagnosis quite often.
