Why does my cabin air just stop blowing completely then randomly start blowing again?

First the ac stopped working, it would blow air but it wasn't cold. Then 8 months- a year later the air stopped blowing completely. Every once in awhile it'll kick back on randomly. Sometimes on starting it ill have air. Other times I won't have anything till randomly it will just start blowing again. One time I hit a pot hole and as the car was on its way out, the air came back. Any ideas what's going on?
