Can crankshaft sensors be damaged by being partially submerged in oil? I had the P0016 Code come up and when I looked under the hood there was a little puddle of oil where the plug-ins are. After cleaning them off externally (i did not remove them) and also draining out half the antifreeze and adding some k seal to the coolant reserve then adding the antifreeze back, the check engine light went off but now the car is over heating. The crazy thing is its driving way better besides the overheating. Should I completely replace those sensors or focus on the coolant reserve and radiator? Haaalp 🫠

Hi this is Dusty, I'm one of the auto experts on RepairPal's Car Genius team. Camshaft and crankshaft position sensors aren't submerged in oil, the sensor side may be exposed to oil inside of the timing cover or engine block. The connector side, however, should remain free of oil, specifically in the electrical connectors, so if oil was spilled during routine maintenance onto the connectors, you did the right thing. If there's another source of the oil, that'll need to be corrected. The engine overheating is the prime issue here and should be diagnosed and remedied as soon as possible. Overheating events can lead to engine damage, which comes with expensive repairs. If you have any other questions feel free to give us a call at 877-913-1554!
