how often should i do engine wash?

Only after performing a repair where fluids got everywhere. Not being careful when cleaning an engine and/or doing it too often can cause damage to the electrical components. A clean engine doesn't run any better than a dusty engine, so unless you need to clean off spilled fluids or clean up after an oil leak, I wouldn't bother.
