What is your question?
Car not used for 6 months battery died & we replaced. Then registration was due said smog test req, OBD11 diagnostic was run all OK / completed except EGR System. Was told to drive and have done that for 2,000 miles to work and home every day and it still shows EGR System not Completed, everything else checks completed. What should I do to fix this so I can smog and register the vehicle? Thank you

Hello, in my experience, Hyundai vehicles are particularly difficult to get "diagnostic monitors" to pass when you are trying to do so, for the purposes of performing a smog test. Unfortunately, in California (where I also am located), smog tests are now basically a state computer being connected to your vehicle to communicate with it to find out if any on board computers with your vehicle detect a fault. In order to do this, each measured component must pass it's "drive cycle". This would include the catalyst, the EGR system (exhaust gas recirculation), the heated oxygen sensors, and the evaporative emissions system. Sounds like you have all but the EGR system passing. The big challenge is that the "drive cycle" you need to embark upon is something that many drivers in many urban areas would never actually achieve. Referencing the Hyundai data sheet that describes what must be complied with to complete a drive cycle, a number of criteria must be met. The coolant temperature must be "cold" - or less than 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Your fuel level should be higher than 15% -- to be safe, just fill your tank! Hyundai actually recommends this test be done on a dynamometer, as it's nearly impossible to do it on normal roads with normal traffic. First, you'll start the engine and idle it for 5 minutes. Then, you'll need to first accelerate to 50 mph within 15 seconds, and hold it there for 8 minutes. Then you have to decelerate back to a stop again within 15 seconds...but not quicker than 5 seconds. Then you sit in park or neutral for 15 minutes. Next, accelerate to 55 mph within 15 seconds, hold it there for one minute, and get back to a stop again within 15 seconds. Hold it in drive for one minute sitting still, then do the same thing again, back to 55 mph for a minute, and then back to 0 within 15 seconds. The next series of activities has you accelerating to 40 mph, holding for a minute, then accelerating to 50 mph for 5 seconds, decelerating back to 40 mph for one minute. This is done 6 times. As you can imagine, this is quite difficult to reproduce by normal driving! This is why it's been so tough for you to accomplish this test to date. I hope some of my information is helpful, i'd recommend finding a shop with a dynamometer for best results, but if not, find a very wide open, vacant area to drive in and try to complete the cycle. Good luck!
