why does the brake warning light stay on, even though the brakes are working, albeit a little less effectively than before. I have recently replaced the front break pads and rear shoes. The break fluid reservoir is losing fluid slowly, too.

You have a pretty serious problem, because you are losing fluid and the red brake light is on, could be a weak or uneven Master Cylinder or many other things. Please have a shop repair this, before you hurt your self or a loved one! http://repairpal.com/gmc-repair-in-glen-ellyn-illinois
