fuel gauge not working

just got this truck and fuel gauge is stuck way past full pulled cluster out and moved needle to half turned ignition on and gauge went back to past full dont know what to do

The fuel level sensor is probably faulty. To diagnose this you have to get to the sensor which is in the top of the gas tank. This is something for a GM specialist since it involves getting to the fuel tank so it's not easy. Here's a directory link fo r you: http://repairpal.com/gmc-repair-in-newark-texas

thanks for your reply i replaced the sensor unit and it works but now it reads fuel but jumps around when driving checked ground but is good dont know what else to do

You may have damaged the gauge when you moved the needle. The fuel tank float was the start of your problem.
