transmission slipping on high gear, seems like it is in neutral

1991 GEO AUTO TRANNY__ 4X4 1.6 SOHC
when i start driving the driving gear (3rd) seems fine but after it races and appears to be in neutral, if i downshift to second gear it is fine and than back to 3rd gear it usually goes into 3rd gear and i can drive in 3rd thereafter, all other gears are working fine, fluid is very clear and at level. some of have recommended changing fluid again but as mentioned..atf has no odor and very clean?

thanks...i am in costa rica where 95% of the cars here are manuals..since most mechanics are not trained on the AT'S..so trying to fix myself
