What is your question?
The battery is fine, starter new. The dashboard lights will come on, and I'll get a click and then a low humming or buzzing sound when I turn the key. Very quiet and very consistent noise. I thought the problem was solved, as I've had extensive work done on the car, but it's doing it again. No mechanic can explain this to me, and I cannot find a description for this in any YouTube video. So far, I haven't been stranded, as it will eventually start. What's going on? It will do this approximately 25% of the time. Otherwise, a good crank and start.
What makes this problem better or worse?
It seems to happen more often when I've traveled somewhere (i.e., not at home)
How long has your 1990 Ford Festiva had this problem?
Off and on for about 6 months

Hi, my name is Devin. I am an auto repair expert with the Car Genius team here at RepairPal. I’m sorry to hear you're having trouble with your vehicle. If your Festiva occasionally won't start and you hear a click followed by a low humming or buzzing sound, it could be due to a few potential issues. Since the battery and starter seem to be good, the problem might be related to the electrical connections. Check the battery terminals and cables for corrosion or looseness, as poor connections can prevent sufficient power from reaching the starter. Weather and road conditions could also affect poor electrical connections. Another possibility is a faulty starter relay or solenoid, which can cause intermittent starting issues. The ignition switch itself could also be worn or faulty, leading to inconsistent electrical contact. Since intermittent symptoms can be difficult to track down, it may be best to consult a trusted repair shop for a diagnosis. If you need more advice, have any other questions about your vehicle, or would like to get connected to a RepairPal Certified shop near you, we have you covered. That's about as good an answer as I could expect. Thank you so much.
