My explorer drives ok but my engine light came on the other day and I noticed that when it is in park it will not rev above 3000 rpms any ideas.I drove it and it will go above 3000 going down the road.

It is designed to do that above 3000 RPM's without a load on the engine. It is called a REV LIMITER. You need to take it to a parts house and ask before hand if they can code out your computer free. Make sure you get the P codes, P0000 something. Then post them here.
need to know what the DTC is, but it sounds like a torque converter problem
would this be the problem with the vehicle sitting in park and reving the motor

I had a code pulled and it was P0401 so I replaced the DPFE valve unhooked the battery to reset the light drove it 15 miles and the light never came back on?
The DPFE sensor is the most common problem for that code.
