What is your question?
I'm just hearing the engine crank over, but not firing. I cranked on it for quite some time, but to no avail. I even charged the battery overnight and cranked on it again. And I tried spraying starting fluid into it a few times. When I sprayed the starting fluid, it seemed to fire briefly and run roughly for about five seconds, then died. I also added dry gas to the gasoline tank, but id didn't do anything different.
What makes this problem better or worse?
Not sure. The engine is "cold" when I try to start it, although the outside temperature yesterday was 51 degrees.
How long has your 2001 Ford E-150 Econoline had this problem?
Just noticed it yesterday when I tried to start the engine. It started right up a month ago when I warmed it up.

when the key is turned to ON,NOT CRANKING,get a helper to turn the key to on while you listen at the filler pipe for the fuel pump to come on/humm/buzz for 2 seconds and then it goes off, take the gas cap off and listen closely. it should come on for 2 seconds and go off every time the key is turned to on,so repeat as many times as needed to make sure....
ok,do this>check for power in and out at the inertia switch(2 wires on each side) located on the front passenger side kick panel(where passengers right foot would be) while helper turns the key to ON,NOT CRANKING.first, if the switch is tripped,(red button will be up)reset it by pushing down on the red button.the purpose of this switch is in case you are in a collision, hit curb,or get bumped,it will trip and shut the power off to the fuel pump in case of a fire.using a volt meter checking for battery voltage at the 2 wires you should see power only for a split second or so,on both sides,in and out to the fuel pump. google this Part Number: SW4177 for a picture of the switch.this switch is the problem a lot of the time and lots of folks don't even know about it and will have their vehicle towed to the dealer.if you can't hear the pump prime when the key is turned on and if you have power at this switch in and out, most of the time the fuel pump has went bad, mine lasted 16 years from the factory! post findings, and if I didn't explain that to where you can understand it,let me know....
Thanks. If I don't hear it, does that mean the fuel pump is bad, or perhaps the fuse or relay need replacing? I checked the fuse today and it was fine. I'm not sure how to check the relay, except to get another one and replace it.
