so when you drive the van it sounds terrible, there's a certain shuttering and rumbling as you traverse up through the gears and holding a certain speed will maintain the same rumble or shutter. What is the problem? and will a transmission rebuild make this go away

I'm sorry to say that noises and vibrations are almost impossible to suggest resolution for in this forum. The best bet is to go on a road test with a good technician near you who can at least point you in the right direction. Often times, this can be done without initial charge, so I would definitely call someone local to you and set up a time for a visit.
