transmission shows stuck in 4th gear

What is your question?

Stopped at drive thru and cut off truck to hear (diesel ) when restarted motor and put into drive , showed transmission in 4th gear. cut engine off , waited a few minutes and restarted went back to drive all back to normal but engine light remains on. Had same problem 3 years ago and went away after restarting several times.

What makes this problem better or worse?
