there is a transfer pump on the back of the motor that supplies fuel to the injection pump. common failure and a new updated pump is available from chrysler. check for operation. the air heaters have power for about 10 seconds on starting. make sure that power is there for them. Roy
crankshaft sensor will not fire at sparkplugs if bad ,how much fuel pressure doe it have
The Truck will most likely still run. The VP44 Injection Pump is self timing and can operate independently from the Crank Shaft Positioning Sensor (CKP). When mine did this last month (1999 Dodge Ram 2500, 4x4, Auto, 5.9L Cummins), it would lope heavily at idle, and fluctuated idle speed from near stall to 1000 RPM. I think this is because the VP44 is trying to make fuel corrections, but is not as accurate as it would be with the CKP intact. It only did this at idle, and other than a slight timing knock, it operated fine while driving. I have modified my engine to run at about 450 hp with injectors, a tuner and various other upgrades. As a result, the cylinders receive more fuel, which made a loud injection knock when the pump adjusted timing every cycle. I do not know what you have done to your pickup, or if it is stock, but you may hear this periodically as I did. You should receive a P1693 code, which will indicate a code is store in a companion module (ECM). The code I found was P0336, which was my Crank Position Sensor. You will have to remove the starter to replace it, if this is the case. Check to see that the wires are not loose, and that you have 5 volts to the CKP. Good Luck
