trans will not go into park 1999 dodge ram 2500 diesel

Hello, the transmission shift lever will not physically go to the park position? Or it goes but the transmission remains in a gear? I would say first it's possible the shift lever linkage is out of adjustment or loose. But it's just a guess -- and doesn't really resolve the problem of having to let off on the accelerator to allow shifting to happen. It's likely there is more than one problem occurring here.
