problem occurs every 5th or 6th start

I found I had to replace the starter, the solenoid is built in and was faulty. I was told you can take the solenoid apart and turn the contact to a new spot and it will work again but did not try that.
I had the same problem with my 99 model @ 190000 miles. Replaced the starter selinoid contacts myself as I consider myself a "shade tree mechanic". Have had no more problems since and truck has 218000 miles. If my memory is correct, a 10mm wrench and a screwdriver are all the tools you need to remove the selinoid cover. pappycap
