What would cause the transmission to stop pulling like you put it in neutral ,

if you Leave it sit for a few minutes it will go in gear but stops after a few feet,sometimes I can drive it 20 miles with no problems before it acts up.just put this transmission in because I lost reverse and the same thing was happening.
