How do you know if the alternator is going bad? I have replaced the serpentine belt and idle pulley but I still hear a squeaking/ticking noise. The only other thing in that area is the alternator. Could this possible be the problem. I am running out of options.

It could be an alternator. We use a stethoscope to trace these noises. You might try taking the belt off completely and run the engine for a couple of minutes to see if the noise is still there. If it is, then the problem is internal. If the noise goes away, then you are back to the belt driven accessories.
a mechanic who works for local auto parts store chain looked at it today. he says that it sounds like the bearings in the alternator are gone bad. does that make any since? if the alternator is the problem, should it have started affecting the battery by now? i am not a mechanic, so i have no idea.
