Transmission wont shift out of 2nd

It happened only 1 time and after he turned it off and tried to start it again it sounded like the started was having problems like it sounded like it was spinning but was grinding a tiny bit.

What makes this problem better or worse?

It was better after hitting the starter with a hammer
