after replacn an O2 sensor should the light stay off

i replaced the O2 sensor,spark plugs,radiator,tranny line from the rad. thermostat, and oil. 2 spark plug wires when pulled off the metal piece stayed on. my friend put it back in an squeezed it tight. it sounds like the engine is missing
