Hi, this is Bo, an auto expert on RepairPal's Car Genius team! Oh, the old "key hostage" situation, eh? Your Grand Caravan is definitely trying to tell you something when it won't start AND refuses to release your key. It's like it's saying, "Nope, we're both staying right here until we figure this out!" This is usually due to a safety interlock system. Most often, the vehicle isn't recognizing that it's fully in Park. The shift interlock mechanism needs to see "Park" before it allows the key to be turned to the off position and removed. Try firmly (but not too aggressively!) ensuring the gear shifter is all the way in Park. You might even try shifting through the gears and back to Park with your foot on the brake. Another common culprit is a dead or very low battery. If the battery doesn't have enough juice, it can't power the solenoids that control these interlocks. Since it won't start, this is a strong possibility. Check your battery voltage. Sometimes, wiggling the steering wheel while gently trying to turn the key can help if the steering lock is engaged tightly. If these simple checks don't do the trick, it could be an issue with the shifter mechanism itself or the ignition lock cylinder.
