oil usage

Most dealers will tell you up to 1 qt. per 1000 miles is acceptable. IMHO it isn't but that's me. On the other hand you should be checking your oil more than once every 5000 miles especially if you know the engine is consuming oil. Please check the oil at least every 3rd fill up. Who is telling you the oil is 2 to 2.5 qts. down? Are they actually measuring what comes out of the drain-plug and filter, or are they just guessing? Was it just the last 2 changes, or just not mentioned or noticed before? Are there any obvious leaks? This isn't at some "Quickie-lube" type place is it? Sorry for all the questions but too much is unknown.
