What will it cost to replace transmission on 2008 T&C

Took my T&C to dealership because check engine light was on, they said compounder in transmission needed to be replaced $1,400. Now I'm told they found too much metal in the pan and need transmission replaced. Does this sound right or am I being taken? Also, should I get fixed at dealership or go somewhere else for a possible lower cost? Thanks for your help.
