Key does not shut off car

What is your question?

Battery dead so jumped it but car started without turning key then when turning key to off all dashboard would stay lit like car was not off. Then I stepped on brake and the dash lights went off. All this was done while sitting in park.

How did your car start without turning the key? You hooked up the jumper cables and the engine cranked over? Having just purchased the vehicle, it's unfortunate that there are probably a few different things going on that are new to you and will need to be resolved.
