What's causing my PT Cruiser to shut off while driving, the RPMs are spiking and it won't get past 3,600 RPMs?

My PT Cruiser has been doing this for months now. It will sky rocket the RPMs while driving, it will try to shut off and sometimes will while driving. Also the temperature gage sky rockets while driving. We put the car in park to try to diagnose it, we slowly accelerated, it gets stuck around 3,600 RPMs and won't get over that, it's acting like it's already red lining and it's not even close. We have taken it to multiple mechanics that cannot figure it out. One place told us the fuel pump was shot. We replaced that, did not fix the issue by any means close. Then we put brand new fuel in it, and brand new oil and oil filter in, still nothing.

What makes this problem better or worse?

Gets worse while driving anywhere.
