Back gate pops open

Hello, I cannot think of a single reasonable reason for the lift gate to pop open when you put the vehicle in gear. However, the vehicle is 15 years old, and I have no idea the condition or any modifications done to the vehicle over the years. Clearly something is triggering the latch motor for some reason; I think of some kind of shorted wiring or non-factory device causing the problem.
