Hello, I’m Pete from the Car Genius team at RepairPal. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this concern on your Chrysler PT Cruiser. Based on the information provided with when and how the limp mode started to occur this issue may be caused by the transmission range sensor/neutral safety switch sending a false signal to the computers on which gear it is shifted into or that a shift position calibration for the range sensor may have been erased to where it may need to be re-calibrated. It does sound like there is at least one fault code coming up with this concern since you need to clear the codes to allow it to function temporarily. What I recommend is having the fault code that is coming up diagnosed properly. There is a test chart for most all fault codes that can be followed that most repair facilities have access to which will help with identifying the cause and which type of a repair is needed. Most repair facilities can generally diagnose a fault like this within an hours time. I recommend having a certified reputable repair facility look into this concern to pinpoint the failure. This is the best route to take to prevent this concern from occurring again. I wish I had some better news to give you on this.
