why did my pt cruiser engine shut down just after making a rattling sound ?

i was going about 20mph when i heard a rattling sound coming from the engine, by the time i got my window down to listen better , the motor shut off.

Did it start back up? Have you tried restarting it? If it sounds like it's turning over really fast when trying to restart it, your timing belt may have snapped.
