What is your question?
But check engine light came on. Had the mechanic want to scan , said it was my catalytic converter. They put a new one in (aftermarket). Drove it for 3 months.Check engine light came back on. Ran a scan showing P0420 code. Mechanics said aftermarket catalytic converters can fail or burnout fast and he wants me to put a chevrolet gold standard catalytic converter in it. Did not put it in yet , but we'll be scheduling to have it done. However , this morning I start the car up and the check engine light is not on. Drove it to work.Turn the car off, turned it back on.No check engine light. So is it really my catalytic converter?
What makes this problem better or worse?
Car runs fine. Only thing I see is a check engine light on.And when they scan it , I got the P0420 code. But now the check and light is off.

Hello, I’m Pete from the Car Genius team at RepairPal. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this concern on your 2017 Chevrolet Trax. Code P0420 can indicate a failing catalytic converter, there are other possible causes as well for this code like an exhaust leak, damage to exhaust components, failing oxygen sensors, or in some cases poorly built aftermarket parts being installed. In my experience there are some aftermarket catalytic converters out there that tend to wear out or fail soon after install or in many cases fail to operate properly even when new which will cause the P0420 code to come back either right away or soon after it is installed. The check engine light can come on and go off intermittently as in some cases the computer may see the catalytic converter operating properly where in other cases or times it may not read properly and this may be what you are seeing now. I recommend having the oxygen sensors tested to make sure they are o.k. as well as the exhaust checked for any exhaust leaks or damage. If these are found to be o.k. then I do recommend having the catalytic converter replaced with a factory OEM replacement or a direct fit OEM replacement to correct this concern.
