From what you describe, and without driving the vehicle personally, it sounds like your four wheel drive may still be engaged. Also, ball joints that need grease can cause steering to stick and cause a creaking noise. Have your local service center take a look and test drive it.
IF 4x4 is not engaged and grease does not fix, consider replacing the steering shaft. It is a common problem with these models. The new ones have an improved design. I replaced this piece in an 05 tahoe and it drove like new.
