If my air conditioner is out of freon will the compressor still kick on?

No the a/c compressor is protected by a pressure switch to alow the system to transfer needed lubrication by the circulation of freeon or refrigerant.The compressor will sieze up if no lubricating oil in the cylinders.The pressure switch senses pressure, and induces magnetic field to pull in the clutch plate.So the compressor shaft can rotate!
