It sounds like it is turning over very fast, and once it does start it smells like paint thinner

Could you have contaminated gas? Poor quality gas would make an engine hard to start. Perhaps disable the ignition and put the fuel line into a large glass jar, let fuel squirt into the jar and see if you have "water" in the fuel. Disabling the ignition will set a Check Engine Light do you have a scan tool to turn off the light. Perhaps charge and test the battery to ensure it is OK and will see you through the winter.
I would suspect a fuel pressure problem. Did the vehicle sit for any period of time (1 month or longer) in our desert heat fuel can turn bad very quickly - many times when a vehicle sits with very low fuel in the tank the fuel will turn to varnish and cause issues with the in-tank fuel pump.
