Codes P1404 and P0401 and also trans not wanting to shift into overdrive

The two codes contradict each other about the EGR system -- EGR valve insufficient flow and also EGR valve stuck open. This system will need to have diagnostic testing to find out what is wrong. However, this has nothing to do with shifting into overdrive; another area testing is requires - using a diagnostic tool to monitor shift solenoid operation, desired gear and actual gear, torque converter engagement and other transmission component operations is needed.
